KENT COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Trial begins for the parents of Jared Chance, the man found guilty for murdering and dismembering the body of Ashley Young of Oshtemo.
James and Barbara Chance are each charged with perjury, for allegedly lying to police, and for being accessories after the fact.
This comes after parts of Young’s body as well as other gruesome evidence were found in Chance’s Grand Rapids home on Franklin Street in November of 2018. A saw with Young’s DNA on it was also found at Chance’s parents’ home in Holland.
In Kent County Court Monday morning Barbara first entered a no contest plea to the perjury and accessory charges. The perjury charge has a maximum penalty of life in prison. James will face the same charges later Monday.
Kent County Circuit Judge Paul J. Denenfeld says he plans to sentence Barbara to no more than one year in Kent County Jail. Her sentencing is scheduled for February 19th.
Their son, Jared Chance, was sentenced in October to 100 to 200 years in prison for second-degree murder, three counts of tampering with evidence, and one count each of mutilating a dead body and concealing a death.
In court the prosecution claimed that Chance’s parents helped move the remains of Young and did not turn the evidence into authorities.
He’s currently being held in a state prison in Saginaw County.
