ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A new resolution has been passed affirming support for second amendment gun rights in Allegan County.
The Allegan County Board of Commissioners voted to pass a resolution on Thursday, February 27th that declares support for gun rights included in the U.S. Constitution and makes the county a second amendment sanctuary.
Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the measure, which includes language that supports county law enforcement and staff in not enforcing any legislation they feel violates constitutionally enshrined gun rights.
A copy of the resolution presented reads in part:
“It is the desire of this board to declare its support of the second amendment to the United States Constitution and to the provisions of the Michigan Constitution which protect ALLEGAN County citizens rights to keep and bear arms.”
The resolution outlines support for the sheriff’s office and county prosecutors, “to not enforce against any citizen an unconstitutional firearms law.”
Other second amendment resolutions have either been enacted or under consideration by county governments across Michigan.
The push to pass the largely symbolic measures follows concerns by gun-rights activists of laws curtailing firearm ownership being passed on the state or federal level.
District Seven Commissioner Rick Cain has voiced support for expanding the rights protected in the resolution to cover the entire list of protections guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution.
On Wednesday, February 26th the Michigan House of Representatives passed a resolution that aims to prevent any laws that infringe on second amendment rights.
In Southwest Michigan, similar language was passed in a resolution by Berrien County’s board of commissioners recently.
