HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Having Pure Michigan funding slashed isn’t necessarily seen as a bad thing to all in the state’s tourism industry.
When $37 million for the popular travel program was a casualty of Governor Whitmer’s 147 line-item vetoes last September, many thought that doom and gloom would descend on an industry that brings in over two billion dollars in state and local taxes annually.
However, tourism officials such as Hillary McAlpine of the Holland Area Visitors Bureau sees this more as a challenge to overcome. “It does allow us the chance to be creative with our digital marketing,” she said during a Thursday appearance on “WHTC Morning News.”
“Things such as these photo contests, where we can get involved with the community and really have a grass roots, organic, home-grown approach to marketing our town, our city, and the great things that we have here to offer people, can give people a reason why they should come visit.”
To that end, McAlpine and the CVB began on Wednesday an “Outdoor Adventure 365 Photo Contest” through the bureau’s website.
