BAJA, CALIFORNIA (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan State Police are praising a television show for helping authorities in Mexico track down a wanted man from Berrien County.
53-year-old William Troy Stanson has been on the run since 2015 after he was charged with first degree sexual assault of a minor investigated by the Michigan State Police Niles Post and accosting a minor investigated by the Bridgman Police Department.
Stanson was featured on the Discovery Network show “In Pursuit with John Walsh” and just hours after the show tips poured in that led to the arrest of Stanson on Tuesday.
When authorities learned of his whereabouts, the St. Joseph FBI office obtained an Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution warrant and requested assistance from their Mexico law enforcement partners in Baja California, located in northwestern Mexico where they arrested Stanson.
Authorities say this arrest signifies the great cooperation between multiple law enforcement agencies in the United States and Mexico. They also thanked the family of the victims for their assistance throughout the investigation.
Wednesday morning Stanson was extradited to United States and will be transported to Berrien County where he is expected to face charges of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, first degree criminal sexual conduct, and failure to appear for sentencing on the original charge of accosting a minor.
