KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Black Lives Matter mural that was painted during a Juneteenth celebration in downtown Kalamazoo is now splattered with white paint.
On June 19th, artists came together to paint the letters on South Rose Street between South and Lovell Streets, stretching 200 feet near the Kalamazoo Public Library, but on August 7th WWMT reported that the mural had been vandalized.
White paint and a shattered bottle were found spilled across the roadway around 8 a.m. Friday. Now, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident as an act of vandalism.
There is no suspect information at this time.
The artwork was inspired by a similar mural on a street in Washington D.C. that leads to the White House. Many Michigan cities have also followed suit with other street art. Kalamazoo Public School Trustee Jermaine Jackson first came up with the idea.
