KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Following the results of the Democratic primary in Michigan’s Sixth Congressional District, State Rep. Jon Hoadley of Kalamazoo has won the nomination in a close victory against Jen Richardson.
According to figures from WWMT, Hoadley won the nomination with 52% of the vote.
“I’m thankful to have the support of voters across the Sixth District,” Hoadley said in a statement. “Michiganders are ready for fresh leadership in Congress, and I have a proven record as a problem-solver. I’m excited to continue fighting for clean air and water, better healthcare, and investments in our public schools in Congress.”
He also spoke of Richardson’s campaign, who was leading the race for a good part of Tuesday night.
“Jen Richardson lives a life of service as a teacher, being on the front lines for kids,” Hoadley stated. “Her campaign focused on issues that face so many of our families like affordable childcare and the struggle of working people to make ends meet. Our communities are stronger because of her voice.”
Hoadley was previously serving as the 60th District State Representative, which will now be held by Julie Rogers of Kalamazoo.
He will now challenge long-time Sixth District holder Fred Upton, who was first elected to Congress in 1986. He also won his nomination for the Republican party in the race against challenger Elena Oelke.
According to Hoadley’s office, last week, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee added Hoadley’s campaign to their Red to Blue program, which targets the most competitive races across the country.
“After 34 years of votes that have not served the interests of Southwest Michigan, voters are clearly ready for new representation,” Hoadley added in a statement.
