KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) is investigating a shooting that took place Monday evening.
Around 7 p.m., officers responded to a report of gunfire in the 1500 block of Cobb Avenue. Officers arrived and spoke with area residents who reported hearing numerous shots being fired.
Witnesses also reported seeing a victim who appeared to have been struck by gunfire.
Investigating officers canvassed the area and quickly learned a gunshot victim was driven away from the scene in a vehicle. This vehicle was contacted as it arrived at a local hospital.
The victim, a 17-year-old Kalamazoo resident, is receiving treatment at a local hospital and is listed in stable condition.
This shooting comes a day after two different shootings were reported in the city.
During a virtual Kalamazoo City meeting, Vice Mayor Patrese Griffin said that she could hear the shooting taking place outside her house.
“Right before this meeting started, I thought I heard gunshots, and I did,” Griffin said. “While we’re on this meeting right now, there were just shots going off in the back of me.”
Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson also spoke of the incident.
“We have a gun crisis in Kalamazoo,” Anderson said. “We cannot accept this in our community. Every resident has the right to expect that no matter what neighborhood they call home, it will be a safe place for them and their families. The tragic, senseless and horrific deaths and shootings are devastating events for the entire community. All of us experience the riptide of this trauma – everyone suffers, no one is unscathed.”
