KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo City Commission is continuing their discussions over the next steps for recreational marijuana in the city.
A special virtual meeting will be held on Monday, April 27th, to discuss the proposed ordinances for marijuana commercial businesses as well as the adult-use marijuana social equity policy.
Kalamazoo city leaders held a marijuana town hall through Zoom earlier this month where they covered a variety of topics like how recreational marijuana would be reflected in zoning laws, the special requirements for the industry, social equity, and the process by which the ordinance is being developed.
On April 15th the Kalamazoo Planning Commission approved a first reading of the new zoning rules, but the ordinance still needs the commission’s final vote of approval which could come sometime in May.
Last fall, commissioners decided to postpone the vote on allowing recreational marijuana businesses until June 1st at the latest because officials wanted to wait and hear more opinions from the public and assess how other communities had found success with their rules.
The upcoming meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Monday on the city’s Facebook page and on their YouTube channel.
Community members without a computer or internet access can listen to the meeting by calling 269-552-6425 and then entering the Meeting ID “914 4378 0298” when prompted.
The agenda and supporting documents can be found here.
Those who have questions regarding any items on the agenda can contact the city commission by calling 269-226-6573 on April 27th and leave a message starting at 5:30 p.m. until the end of the public comment period. Remarks will then be played during the citizens’ comment portion of the agenda.
The commission will not be approving any of the ordinances during this upcoming meeting; it is only another discussion. There are still two regularly scheduled meetings on May 4th and May 18th where they will review the text amendments to zoning, licensing, and the social equity policy before final approval is made.
