KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo County Commission is putting their support behind driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants in Michigan.
On Tuesday they passed a proclamation urging state lawmakers to make the change and allow everyone to obtain a license.
Many residents spoke in support of the measure with one woman saying, ““Imagine if every time you had to go to work or to the store you were risking never seeing your family again.”
The proclamation passed on an 8-to-1 vote.
Commissioner John Gisler was the only one against the motion, explaining that he could not support something that is against the law.
The County’s acceptance of the proclamation follows the City Commission’s approval of the same proclamation last July.
Although this does not change the actual law, supporters believe it’s the first step to granting undocumented immigrants licenses here in Michigan.
Over a dozen others states have already passed similar resolutions.
