BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) is announcing that Binder Park Zoo has been granted accreditation by AZA’s independent Accreditation Commission.
Although BPZ has been accredited since 1983, the Zoo has to pass an examination every five years to maintain its status.
“AZA accreditation signifies Binder Park Zoo’s active role in protecting our world’s wild animals and wild places while providing exceptional animal care and meaningful guest experiences,” AZA President and CEO Dan Ashe said in a press release. “Fewer than 10% of animal exhibitors registered with USDA have achieved AZA accreditation, so Binder Park Zoo is truly a leader in the zoological profession.”
BPZ was graded on factors such as animal care and welfare, conservation, education, and more.
Additionally, all facets of the business end were examined, including keeper training, visitor safety, and financial stability.
“We enjoy the support of a strong and committed board, a creative and passionate staff as well as strategic community partners,” President and CEO of Binder Park Zoo Diane Thompson said in a press release. ”Our success as an organization is tied directly to the combination of these strengths which allows us to operate to the high standards set forth by the AZA.”
The AZA notes that the Wild Africa exhibit remains an “outstanding guest experience” since opening 20 years ago.
