LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Seven Michigan school districts are set to receive 17 new electric school buses as part of an effort to support cleaner environments and healthier students.
According to an official press release, the new buses are part of a replacement program funded in part by a Volkswagen Mitigation Settlement allocation through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s Fuel Transformation Program. The project is managed by Zeeland Public Schools.
Older diesel fuel buses, which are said to emit harmful fumes, will be replaced through a reimbursement program that will include replacements for diesel-based equipment. Further grants of the program will include other vehicles and equipment, including marine vehicles and public transit.
One of the buses will be unveiled in Lansing Thursday during an event on Capitol Hill that will be attended by Governor Whitmer and other officials.
Zeeland, Ann Arbor, Gaylord, Oxford, and Roseville are among the recipients for the new buses, while in the Western Michigan area, Kalamazoo and Three Rivers have also been selected.
