LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Michigan Department of Technology and Budget has released new data for Michigan’s unemployment rate through September.
The unemployment rate stayed at 4.2 percent through last month, meaning that the rate was largely unchanged, though it dropped slightly. The data shows that unemployment dropped down by 3,000. The overall workforce declined slightly through the month.
Compared to the rest of the country, the rate of unemployment was just seven-tenthsin of a percentage point above the national rate.
An official press release lists the following findings as highlights of the data:
- Total unemployment in Michigan fell for the second consecutive month in September, receding by 1.4 percent over the month.
- Over the year, the number of unemployed in the state grew by 16,000, or 8.3 percent. In comparison, the national unemployment total fell by 3.6 percent over the year.
The press release also notes that job declines in manufacturing, professional and business services, and government were only partially offset by small job advances in trade, transportation, and utilities; and leisure and hospitality.
“Michigan’s labor market showed typical seasonal trends in September,” director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives Jason Palmer said. “With the start of the academic year, some youth and young adults tend to exit the labor market in September as seasonal and tourism-related jobs decline.”
It is important to note that the data only reflects the week of September 8-14. The auto industry labor dispute that began was not measured into the data.
The data in relation to the auto industry dispute will be factored into the data for the month of October, which will be released next month.
