BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Health officials have confirmed that a fourth victim in Michigan has died from the mosquito-born virus Eastern Equine Encephalitis, or EEE.
79-year-old Stan Zalner of Battle Creek was first reported ill with the virus about two weeks ago. His family has confirmed that he passed away from the infection.
Zalner makes the fourth victim to succumb to the EEE virus in Michigan this year, and the 9th case of infection overall.
Health officials have confirmed 33 cases of the virus in animal subjects, including two wolf pups at the Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek. In total, the State has confirmed that 23 of animals recorded have died.
The news comes as officials in Battle Creek are preparing for an aerial mosquito spray Wednesday night.
Citizens are urged to take proper precautions against mosquito bites.
