LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan lawmakers are considering the idea of having toll booths installed in Michigan to raise more funds for the state.
The proposition comes in the form of Senate Bill 517, which is Republican Sen. John Bizon, R-Battle Creek, and is supported by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
As written, Senate Bill 517 would have MDOT hire a team of experts to study tolling in Michigan and figuring out how much money toll booths could raise, as well as where those toll booths would go.
Governor Whitmer says that she is open to discussing the idea, but does not believe it would be enough to tackle all of Michigan’s road funding needs.
The tolling proposition is just one of many ideas to raise funds for Michigan roads, with Whitmer’s proposed 45-cent gas tax being one of them.
