KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — There is now a vacancy left on the Kalamazoo City Commission.
At Monday’s meeting Commissioner Shannon Sykes-Nehring resigned from her position after serving for three and a half years.
Earlier she announced that she will be moving to a rural area of Calhoun County where she can keep livestock, and therefore no longer eligible to remain on the Commission.
The self-described activist explained that one of her proudest moments was when she helped organize the illegal encampment in Bronson Park last summer to support the homeless.
Sykes-Nehring was arrested when officers evacuated the homeless encampment.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell praised her for her sometimes difficult and controversial work as a public servant and citizens and commissioners alike had a chance to speak about her accomplishments at their Monday meeting.
Sykes-Nehring added that even though she is no longer on the commission she will find ways to stay an activist in the community.
The commission now has 30 days to appoint a replacement.
