HARTFORD (WKZO AM/FM) – Another PFAS contamination site has been found in the area. They say levels as high as 9,000 parts per trillion have been found in test wells near the old Du-Wel Metal Plating facility in Hartford.
Representative Beth Griffin says after the discovery of 192 other sites, the state now has a blueprint on how to respond, and they have already.
So far the municipal system does not appear to be tainted, and the schools do not have a problem but bottled water will be provided for 50 homes near the plant that have private wells. Testing those wells begins today.
A forum on the issue will be held next Wednesday at the Federated Church at 6 p.m.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says she plans to go after the source at PFAS contamination sites around the state.
Not just the companies that discarded the compounds into the environment, but 3M the industrial giant that produced the industrial chemicals and sold them to manufacturers.
The AG hopes is putting out a call nationally for attorneys that can assist the state to pursue claims against manufacturers, distributors and other responsible parties related to PFAS and opioids.
The chemicals in various formulations have been used by number of industrial firms in west Michigan, to waterproof shoes and paper and as part of the plating process, which is the case in Hartford and Richland.
