KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Public School District could become a little more eco-friendly with a new electric school bus.
The 2020 71-passenger bus is part of a pilot program by the Michigan Association for Pupil Transportation and will be funded by the Volkswagen State Mitigation Trust and through the district’s 2018 bond fund.
6 other Michigan school districts were also chosen for the program, so there will be 17 electric school buses within the state.
All the districts will report back to the state to discuss how the electric bus pilot project is going.
— INCREASED SECURITY —
Kalamazoo Public Schools are also continuing to beef up security measures around the district.
At their Thursday meeting the Board of Education approved a nearly $59,000 purchase to better secure entrances at 8 school buildings.
The money comes from the $96.7-million dollar bond that passed by voters last year, with $4-million of that going to security improvements.
The entrance changes will take place at El Sol, Hillside Middle, Lincoln International Studies, Milwood Magnet, Northglade Montessori, Prairie Ridge Elementary, Spring Valley Elementary, and Woods Lake Elementary.
The entrance changes will make visitors go through the school office first before they can enter the rest of the building.
