KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to a report of a chemical spill at a trucking business on 3600 Alvan. The incident happened around 10 a.m. on Friday.
Upon arrival, Public Safety Officers learned that a 55 gallon drum of Trimethyl Phosphate had been punctured and was leaking inside of a trailer outside of the business. Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers along with members of the Kalamazoo County HAZMAT team responded and were able to stop the leak.
Approximately half of the drum’s contents had already leaked out but it was isolated to the trailer it was in. Due to windy conditions, the spilled contents’ fumes were blown to a nearby business before the leak could be sealed and that business was voluntarily evacuated.
Two people from the business were transported to the hospital for treatment of minor issues related to exposure of the chemical fumes.
The leaking container has been rendered safe and there is no further threat to any nearby businesses or local ground water.
