OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A citation is being issued to Western Michigan University after sediment from the construction of the new Business, Technology, Research Park 2 washed into Asylum Lake.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy issued the violation saying that there were issues with the university’s Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control plan and that the construction team does not have proper erosion control measures in place.
For example, a silt fence was specified in the plan but there is no fence around the majority of the site along Drake Road.
This comes after last month’s heavy rain caused sediment overflow from the park construction site in Oshtemo, across Drake Road, and into the lake.
The university could be fined if they do not resolve these issues by Friday.
