The preliminary hearing of a Grand Rapids man charged with murdering a woman from Kalamazoo has revealed more about her grisly death and dismemberment.
Jared Chance has been ordered to stand trial in Kent County on murder and other charges after a District Judge heard some of the evidence compiled by investigators in the case.
The 29 year old Chance is accused of killing an Oshtemo woman, Ashley Young, and then sawing off her arms, legs and head. She was last seen with him alive on November 29.
On December 2nd, a downstairs tenant in a Grand Rapids home Chance was renting found Young’s torso in the basement and called police.
Young’s death has been ruled homicide by unspecified means. Authorities suspect Chance used a 22 caliber gun he’d shown to others to kill her.
Chance’s brother, Konrad, testified Friday that he learned of the killing on December 1st and his brother seemed -quote- very disturbed – unquote.’
Their parents, James and Barbara Chance, have each been charged with perjury and being accessories to the crime.
He is charged with open murder, mutilating a body, failing to disclose a death and several counts of tampering with evidence. Because he is also charged as a habitual offender, conviction on any of the charges could earn him a life sentence.
