KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo area teacher is challenging Congressman Fred Upton in the 2020 U.S. House race.
35-year-old Jen Richardson is a part-time teacher at the Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center and says her main goal is to better represent and help the working and middle class.
According to her website, Richardson states, “My platform is simple: we need working and middle class people making policy decisions. 92% of American household incomes are below $200,000 a year. Shouldn’t Congress represent the population? Shouldn’t 92% of Congress be people who make less than $200,000 a year? YES. But it isn’t. Over 50% of people in Congress are MILLIONAIRES. People like us don’t have time and money to run against wealthy, connected people. LET’S DO IT. Let’s run against them. Let’s win and give the working and middle class the representation in Congress that we deserve.”
She also states that she cares about families and fighting inequality, saying, “We can do so much better for our citizens, children, and our parents that are doing their best to make ends meet. This includes easy access to social services, education, healthcare and a healthy environment.”
Richardson, a democrat, would take on State Representative Jon Hoadley who announced his run for Congress back in April.
Upton has represented Michigan’s 6th Congressional District since 1986.
