PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Portage has announced the date and time for its annual Tree Lighting and Traditional Holiday Celebration.
The annual event will take place on Saturday, December 7th from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
City officials say that the event will begin with the “I Love Portage” essay contest winners performing the ceremonial lighting of decorations in the Portage City Centre at the end of Library Lane.
Following the lighting ceremony, a horse drawn wagon with Santa and Mrs. Claus will lead carolers and guests along the Portage Creek Bicentennial Park Trail to the Celery Flats Historical Area to continue the celebration.
Live music for the event will be provided by the Portage Central High School Choirs, who will perform and lead the participants in singing carols. Further music entertainment will be provided by the Proclamation Brass ensemble.
Treats will be distributed during the ceremony for free, while hot chocolate and cider will be available for purchase. All proceeds will be donated to the Portage Community Center.
Officials are encouraging citizens to donate gifts for needy families. The Portage Community Center will accept donations of new winter hats, gloves, mittens, toys and non-perishable food items.
Monetary donations will also be accepted.
Parking will be available at Portage Central High School, Portage City Hall and the Portage District Library (enter at the Portage Senior Center on Currier Drive), as well as parking lots in the Celery Flats Historical Area.
Attendees should note that Library Lane will be closed to traffic for the event.
