KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Kalamazoo has voted to order additional service replacements for existing lead lines.
Commissioners unanimously voted in favor of the replacements during a city meeting Monday night.
The replacements are being made through the 2019 Lead Services Replacement Project. The measure approves a change order with SWT Excavating in the amount of $700,000.00.
The agreement will create an additional 93 service line replacements in the city.
According to a statement through the city website, the Department of Public Service wants to be more proactive with the ongoing efforts of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to replace all lead lines.
Public Services had identified an additional 93 houses with non-copper services or services with undefined material.
Public Services had previously stated that the work performed by SWT Excavating was satisfactory and recommended the approval of this measure.
This measure was one of six that were unanimously approved by City commissioners on Monday night.
