LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s been a tough week for Bill Schuette.
His campaign shifted strategy, brought in some new personnel and changed their message this week after the national party decided to withdraw money, and they continue to trail in the polls.
Meanwhile the campaign has taken some well publicized hits.
Members of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce are quitting the group over its endorsement of Schuette, over his stance on gay rights.
The unkindest cut of all may be the formation of the “Republicans for Whitmer” group co-chaired by former Congressman Joe Schwarz of Battle Creek and former Health Director Jim Haveman, who says they have been talking about it for months.
They say if they truly want a cooperative and bipartisan state government, then they stand a lot better chance of it with Gretchen Whitmer as Governor.
About a dozen former republican officials are in the group.
