KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Friday September 14th is Amnesty Day in Kalamazoo: a day where criminals with low-level nonviolent misdemeanor warrants or charges can clean their slate.
Chief Judge of the 8th District Court Christopher Haenicke says there are 3,700 outstanding warrants just from the city of Kalamazoo.
The new event is a way for individuals with outstanding low-level nonviolent misdemeanor warrants can come forward and address their crimes with the court in hopes of avoiding jail time.
The prescreening will take place at the First Congregational Church from 1 p.m until 5 p.m. with doors closing at 6 p.m.
From there participants will be directed to Bronson Park to visit with service agencies and employment organizations like Michigan Works to help get their lives back on track.
The event is a partnership between the City of Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, the Kalamazoo County 8th District Court, Kalamazoo County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney and the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department.
