TEXAS TOWNSHIP (WKZO AM/FM) — Texas Township officials are continuing to come up with a plan to help residents battling high water levels, flooded basements, and damaged property around Eagle and Crooked Lakes.
Monday night the Township Board announced they are forming a task force to seek state and federal help, but they also fear it may not come in time, if it comes at all.
They say getting FEMA to help may be a challenge.
The Federal agency just turned down the Governor’s request for assistance from flash flooding that wrecked several counties in the western Upper Peninsula, and Hurricane Florence is expected to cause more issues for many along the East Coast.
Supervisor Jim Hinkle has never seen the lakes rise this much. He says they were actually pumping water into the lakes for the last 20 years because the lake levels were so low.
Texas Township officials released a statement on their Facebook page stating:
“Texas Township is aware of the flooding and water table issues affecting many of our residents and is conducting a Flood Damage Assessment to help us to 1) identify the cause of the continued flooding and why we are not seeing relief; 2) identify a solution to reduce flooding and water levels; and 3) help determine if the Township is eligible to apply for a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant to assist in funding that solution.”
They add that any residents that are impacted by flooding or water damage, can complete an assessment on their website.
