KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The protesters, who were arrested for refusing to leave an illegal homeless encampment in Bronson Park when ordered to on September 19th, were in court Thursday for violating a police zone.
Ten of them were formally charged with the misdemeanor and pled not-guilty.
City Commissioner Shannon Sykes Nehring also got an order to appear, but learned when she showed up that the Prosecutor had declined to press charges against her.
She argues that she should have been charged with the rest of the protesters.
She had been arrested for resisting, going out of her way to force police to cuff her after Public Safety officers declined to arrest her on the same charge as the others.
This comes after officials said the protesters were violating a city ordinance and ordered them to empty the park before the September 19th deadline or be arrested.
