VAN BUREN COUNTY (WKZO AM/FM) — A former Covert Township police rookie who ran afoul of the law he swore to uphold, just two months into his new job, has now cut a deal with prosecutors in a sexual assault case.
Erich Fritz made a traffic-stop last July on a suspected drunk driver and found a man and a woman in the vehicle who were both intoxicated.
He took the woman to the Comfort Inn in Paw Paw, and took the male driver to jail. Then after his shift, he returned to the motel and allegedly sexually assaulted the woman.
Fritz has agreed to enter a no contest plea to one count of unlawful imprisonment. In exchange, two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct were dismissed in March and kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct counts were dropped last week.
He resigned soon after the allegations were made. His sentencing is scheduled for July 17.
