PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Investigators are looking into the cause of a major fire at a warehouse in Portage.
Crews from multiple departments were called to J. Rettenmaier on Vanderbilt Avenue around 9:30 last night after smoke and flames could be seen from as far away as Schoolcraft.
Portage Public Safety officers say there were no reports of injuries and the flames were brought until control in about an hour, but the building appears to be a total loss.
This comes about 3-weeks after the same company had a small fire on top of the building’s roof that they believe started from one of the units used to shred paper at the plant.
Crews from Texas, Oshtemo and Comstock Townships provided assistance at the scene and the South Kalamazoo County Fire Authority, Pavilion Township, and Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety provided station coverage during the fire.
