KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Citizens in Kalamazoo will find it easier to have recreational fires thanks to a new city fire code update.
The Kalamazoo City Commission passed an ordinance Monday night to allow recreational fires within city limits as long as certain requirements are met.
The original update as written would allow contained burns in one and two family homes, provided it were at least 25 feet from any structure, among other requirements.
Citizens at the meeting were mostly supportive of the amendment, but wanted a smaller distance than 25 feet, with many proposing a 10 foot distance from structures.
An amendment was made during the meeting to allow contained fireplaces to be limited to 15 feet from any structure. Any closer would require a permit, which will be free of charge.
A permit being granted will depend on each individual property and will require inspection from Kalamazoo fire officials.
Those in violation may be subject to a warning or other disciplinary measures.
