BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Two people involved in a plot to kidnap, rape, and murder a child have been sentenced in Branch County Circuit Court as of Monday.
Talia Renee Furman and David Lee Bailey were among the four people involved in the conspiracy.
According to an official press release from the office of Attorney General Dana Nessel, the charges are as follows –
-
Furman – 25 to 50 years in prison for Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and 11-50 years in prison for Conspiracy to Commit Kidnapping; and
-
Bailey – 25 to 50 years in prison for Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and 5.5 years to 50 years in prison for Conspiracy to Commit Kidnapping.
Both defendants plead guilty to their charges last June, and will have to register as sex offenders. They will also be subject to lifetime global monitoring.
“This sentencing makes it clear that when it comes to the safety and welfare of our children and residents, my office will stop at nothing to hold dangerous individuals accountable,” Attorney General Dana Nessel said in the press release. “I appreciate the Court’s decision and commitment to ensuring justice in this case was served. And I am incredibly proud of the swift action taken by the Michigan State Police and our career prosecutors who intercepted these plans to carry out heinous crimes and prevented Michigan children from being harmed.”
The two other defendants in the case, Jayme LaPoint and Matthew Toole, are currently in different stages of their own sentencings. LaPoint plead guilty to her charges in July and will be sentenced next month, while a trial for Toole will begin in October.
The four defendants were arrested before the plot could be carried out.
