CASS COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that an elderly woman crashed into a tree after falling asleep behind the wheel.
Around 6:30 Wednesday morning, officers responded to the site of the crash at Corwin St. near Green Lake Rd. in Cass County.
When they arrived, the vehicle had flipped on its passenger side. 81-year-old Patricia Rife of Dowagiac had fallen asleep while driving and needed to be extricated.
She was then transferred to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Investigators say Rife was wearing her seatbelt at the time, alcohol and drugs were not factors, and her airbag deployed.
The crash remains under investigation at this time.
