KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS), along with K-9 officer Lex, were dispatched Tuesday to a home in the 600 block of Collins Street regarding a stolen vehicle. The victim told police that the vehicle was parked and warming in their driveway when it was taken.

After being stolen, the vehicle crashed into a tree across the street, and two suspects were seen fleeing the area on foot. Immediately, a K-9 track was conducted by KDPS officer Lindsey DenHarder and her K-9 Lex.
The track led to a home in the 800 block of Hays Park Avenue, where two juveniles were apprehended.
The suspects were taken to the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home, where they are being held on several charges related to the incident.
“In recent weeks, we have seen a spike in the number of vehicles stolen after being left unlocked when warming,” KDPS Assistant Chief Dave Boysen said in a statement. “We want this unfortunate incident to be a reminder to all Kalamazoo residents to remain vigilant and make sure your vehicles are locked at all times, including when warming on cold winter days. I also want to remind residents that spare keys should not be left in vehicles as criminals are actively searching unlocked cars for keys.”
