KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Wednesday morning, a Silent Climb will be hosted at Waldo Stadium for the purposes of acknowledging the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The first of its kind, participants can choose to sign up for one of three climbs –
- Mini Climb – 1113 steps counting both up and down steps
- Medium Climb – 2226 steps counting both up and down steps
- Full Climb – 2226 steps ONLY counting the up steps
Army ROTC Scholarship and Enrollment Officer at WMU Billy Clayton explained the significance of climbing the stairs on 9/11.
“The number of the stairs is equal to the number of stairs that the firefighters took to go up to the twin towers during 9/11, so we’re just trying to do something to show how we remember.”
The three climbs are priced out differently and the proceeds will be donated to different causes.
“The proceeds will be split 50/50 between the Cuff & Ladder fund, which provides services to the public service individuals in Southwest Michigan,” Clayton said. “It also goes to the Veterans and Dependents Scholarship Fund for military students at Western Michigan University.”
The Silent Climb begins at 7 a.m. Wednesday morning with open registration available until 6:45. Refreshments will be provided by Kellogg’s while supplies last.
