BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Battle Creek Police Department says officers recovered five firearms and made multiple weapons-related arrests Friday and Saturday, while they also investigated a Sunday shooting in which an occupied home was struck, but the person inside was not injured.
BCPD says Friday a school resource officer received information about a possible shooting involving specific individuals at or after a homecoming-related gathering. The officer shared the information with BCPD’s Gang Suppression Unit, which identified individuals of concern and the location of an after-party near High and Echo streets.
Officers found one of those individuals, a 16-year-old, with a handgun reported stolen. The juvenile was lodged at the Calhoun County Juvenile Home on multiple weapons-related charges, including possession of a stolen firearm.
Saturday, officers responded to a report of gunfire near Wagner Drive and Emmett Street. A caller reported that two juveniles were firing a handgun in the woods near the Linear Trail.
Officers located the juveniles and recovered a handgun from a 15-year-old Battle Creek resident, who was lodged at the Calhoun County Juvenile Home on charges including carrying a concealed weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm. A 12-year-old was released to a parent. An adult was also charged in connection with the incident for unsafe firearm storage.
Later Saturday, officers checking out a large street gathering found a 17-year-old with a stolen firearm. The juvenile was lodged at the Calhoun County Juvenile Home on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of stolen property.
In separate incidents, officers arrested an 18-year-old male carrying a concealed firearm during a check of a party store parking lot and recovered a firearm during a traffic stop involving a 38-year-old male. The 18-year-old was lodged at the Calhoun County Jail.
Police reported that the 38-year-old had a firearm and suspected narcotics. He fled from officers, was apprehended and was lodged at the Calhoun County Jail on firearms, drug, and resisting and obstructing charges.
During another traffic stop, officers stopped a 21-year-old male suspected of involvement in narcotics distribution. They seized suspected narcotics and approximately $6,000 in suspected drug trafficking proceeds.
At about 10:20 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to reports of shots fired near Washington and Baldwin Avenues. Investigators determined that gunfire struck a home in the first block of West Baldwin Avenue. One person was inside and was not injured.
Police have not identified a suspect, and the shooting remains under investigation.
