PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Along with the city of Kalamazoo, the city of Portage has also put a pause on data centers and battery energy storage systems, and its revealed they may need to extend their one-year moratorium.
City Development Officer Peter Dame gave the city council a presentation on the Planning Commission’s work plan for the coming year last evening.
He says they have a model ordinance template for the controversial high-tech facilities on hand, but it needs work.
Dame says they need to complete ongoing work on their industrial and commercial rezoning plan first.
He says they won’t know where to put the high-tech facilities, until they have the overall plan done.
The clock started ticking on Portage’s one-year moratorium in March, when it was approved by the council.
It will take at least a couple of months to get the draft rezoning changes through the approval process.
That means they have a lot of work to do, and Dame suggests they may not have enough time to do it.
