KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Residents of Kalamazoo will have an opportunity to learn more about disabled citizens this week thanks to a free workshop.
The workshop, titled “Rise Up! Disability Resistance, History and Pride,” is being hosted by Disability Network Southwest Michigan.
According to an official press release, the purpose of the workshop is to provide discussion and activities that expand awareness of disability history and support the journey to disability pride.
“There is a lot of stigma and feelings of shame around disability identities,” the press release states. “Family, friends, and human service professionals often have a lack of knowledge about disability history and struggle to find ways of supporting disability pride.
The workshop is free; however, pre-registration is required by contacting Miranda Grunwell at grunwellm@dnswm.org or (269) 345-1516 x 120. When registering, indicate if you require an accommodation to participate in the workshop.
The press release states that these are fragrance free events and are asking attendees to not wear any scented products.
The workshop will be held on November 15 from 9:30 – 11:30 AM at Disability Network’s office located at 517 E. Crosstown Parkway in Kalamazoo.
