KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Students may see an overhaul of the current reproductive health curriculum in Kalamazoo Public Schools if a proposed update takes place.
The school district is considering the adoption of a curriculum known as “Rights, Respect, Responsibility,” a free resource by the organization Advocates for Youth.
This curriculum is said to be more up-to-date than the current one, which school officials say hasn’t been updated in ten years.
The curriculum explores topics such as dating violence, gender identity, and being safe in an online setting.
According to the curriculum website, the teachings adhere to the following principles:
RIGHTS: Youth have the inalienable right to honest sexual health information; confidential, consensual sexual health services; and equitable opportunities to reach their full potential.
RESPECT: Youth deserve respect. Valuing young people means authentically involving them in the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs and policies that affect their health and well-being.
RESPONSIBILITY: Society has the responsibility to provide young people with all of the tools they need to safeguard their sexual health, and young people have the responsibility to protect themselves.
“Learning about good communication, safety in relationships, and growth and development lays a foundation that can support healthy relationships and healthy behaviors throughout a person’s lifetime,” the website reads.
The board notes that hiring new teachers may be necessary for the program.
School officials are expected to vote on the program at its next meeting on Thursday, Nov. 21. If passed, the Board would want the program implemented beginning next Spring.
