BENTON TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — One home invader is dead and another is at large after they were shot by a homeowner during a break in in Benton Township.
Police say 23 year old Dante Long Jr. of Benton Harbor was the intruder who was shot dead during the home invasion.
It happened around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Briarwood Apartments on Union Avenue.
Officers say two masked armed men entered the apartment and ordered residents to get down.
That’s when a tenant in a bedroom came out with a rifle and shot one of the suspects.
The home invaders fled the apartment and continued shooting in its direction.
When Benton Township Police officers arrived they located one of the suspects laying outside the apartment building suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect was identified using a portable fingerprint unit, but his name has not been released.
Authorities say 3 men, 1 woman, and 3 children were all inside the apartment at the time and were not hurt.
An investigation is still underway to locate the second suspect.
