KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo Public Library will stop charging late fees in 2020.
Officials announced over the weekend that they would eliminate late fees next year, and even wipe away existing debts owed to their branches.
The move comes after the library voiced concerns over lower-income residents avoiding utilizing learning resources and checking out books because of persistent library debt.
Librarians and employees handed out chocolate coins and bookmarks during last Saturday’s Maple Hill Kalamazoo Holiday Parade announcing the changes.
They say the move can help more than 6,000 cardholders return to the library.
