KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force has been retooled with an executive order by Governor Gretchen Whitmer that was signed in Kalamazoo yesterday afternoon.
Whitmer also declared June as Gun Safety Awareness Month in Michigan and says the task force’s next phase of work will be to emphasize public education, tracking the effectiveness of gun violence prevention policies, and coordination among state agencies.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller is on the task force and says the new focus recognizes “that there are many different ways that we can touch communities that we just haven’t done yet.”
Fuller says there are misconceptions about the state’s gun laws, especially the risk protection law that lets a judge temporarily remove guns from people who have been deemed a danger to themselves or others, and says it’s temporary and people are not losing their 2nd Amendment rights.
