VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Benton Harbor man has been sentenced in a drunk driving incident that killed two people last January.
On January 12th, Jose Humberto Canedo he crossed the centerline on Red Arrow Highway and slammed head-on into a Jeep, killing two.
The victims were listed as 73-year-old Mary Ann Fender of Paw Paw and a 6-year-old riding in Canedo’s vehicle, Skylinn Salinas. A passenger in the Jeep and a 1-year-old in his own vehicle survived.
Last month, Canedo pleaded no contest to the charges, which were two counts of second-degree murder and six counts of operating a vehicle with high-blood alcohol content.
Canedo will now serve up to 35 years in prison for the homicide charges and up to ten years for the operating charges.
