COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The top official for Kalamazoo County’s Comstock Township is out, after the township Board of Trustees voted 4-3 to terminate Superintendent Scott Hess’ contract Monday night.
Because Hess was fired without cause, the township is now obligated to pay him around $341,000.
Township Supervisor Ben Martin told MLive citizens had recently brought up complaints about Hess, including questions about the validity of his oath of office and whether a previous board acted properly in approving a residency exemption for the superintendent.
Martin says officials sought an opinion about the contract from the Michigan Attorney General’s Office and the Kalamazoo County Office of Prosecuting Attorney, but the township board took action before waiting for a response. Martin made a motion to delay the move at Monday’s board m, but it failed after discussion.
The township gave Hess a five-year contract in October 2023, running through 2028.
