LANSING, MI — On the August 4, ballot, Ingham County voters will decide if the Capital Area District Libraries (CADL) library millage should be renewed for another four years.
The measure if passed would continue CADL’s operating millage at a rate not to exceed 1.5586 mills for four years, maintaining the funding that supports library operations and services without increasing the current rate.
According to a press release, approximately 90% of CADL’s operating budget comes from the voter-approved millage. The funding sustains 13 branch libraries, a mid-Michigan Local History Center, mobile libraries, outreach services, collections, programs and events, and technology, which spans 23 communities. For every $100,000 of a home’s taxable value, the millage costs approximately $156 per year, or about $13 per month.
The renewal would allow CADL to maintain its operations and planned level of services for the next four years, officials say. If the millage does not pass, many library services will be eliminated, and branches may have to close.
