KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A couple parents of the Kalamazoo Public School District are claiming that local school libraries are not LGBTQ-friendly.
Kalamazoo Schools have installed what they call “Diverse Libraries” at many of their schools to make sure that the topics covered match the make-up of the student body.
But at Thursday night’s Kalamazoo Public School Board meeting, parents Sarah Davis and Rebecca McCleary argued that the LGBTQ community has been intentionally left out of the mix. They said the decision not to include this literature “fails our students.”
Trustee Jason Morris asked that administrators look into the allegations.
“We cannot live up to that mantra ‘Every child. Every opportunity. Every time.’ if we are not truly doing it at word and deed, otherwise it’s just lip service, so we need to address that,” Morris said.
The changes are being made to make sure that each student can find lifestyles and characters they identify with in their school libraries.
