KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A new course focusing on women’s impact in history will be offered to high school students at Kalamazoo Public Schools.
The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education approved the social studies elective at it’s weekly meeting on Thursday, December 5th.
The district was first introduced to the idea of adding women’s studies courses after two students and a supporting teacher proposed a possible curriculum to the board on November 29th, 2018.
The new class will educate student on the suffrage and feminist movements, and highlight achievements and innovations made by notable women throughout history.
District officials say they heard students voice concerns that women’s issues were not being represented in pre-existing course material.
The new elective is available to high school students starting during the 2020-2021 academic school year.
