KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Kalamazoo is under a local state of emergency and a state emergency declaration as of Friday due to last week’s storms and high groundwater levels and high levels of the Kalamazoo River and Portage Creek.
City officials note the Morrow Dam in Comstock Township remains in a high-flow stage, but is operating normally with no known issues. The Kalamazoo River and Portage Creek are both expected to start decreasing their water levels this week.
The city also says several homes in Kalamazoo have experienced flooding in their basements and water intrusion due to the abnormally high groundwater. People are being encouraged to check their basement for signs of flooding and avoid areas that have unusually high collections of water like a backyard pond, and keep kids away from newly formed bodies of water.
Flooding can be reported online using this link.
Free sandbags are also available at these locations:
Northside Association for Community Development (NACD)
Douglass Community Association
Washington Square Parking Lot (West of Portage Street)
Additionally, the Michigan State Police Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division is coordinating the distribution of cleanup kits for affected residents. Individuals in need of cleanup supplies should call 211 to request assistance.
