BERRIEN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has approved a five-year plan regarding repairs and expansions in the county parks.
The plan is meant to address deteriorating infrastructure and further expansion, such as trail development.
Officials say that most of the projects need grant funding in order to be fulfilled. As a result, the full plan will be submitted to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources next month.
In Madeline Bertrand Park, around $200,000 is needed to repair the River Shelter. A campground with varying amenities is also proposed, plus a bigger disc golf course.
Additionally, a new millage has been proposed for extra funding. A small boost to 0.2 mills is said to create a new yearly revenue of around $800,000.
According to a report by Berrien County Park officials, tourism revenue is only increasing both statewide and in the county. The report estimates that around $18.1 billion is generated statewide for the tourism industry annually.
