PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Portage has earned its 35th Tree City USA designation and 6th Growth Award from the Arbor Day Foundation.
The Tree City USA program honors communities that demonstrate a strong commitment to planting, maintaining, and celebrating trees. To receive Tree City USA recognition, communities must meet four standards: maintain a tree board or department, adopt a community tree ordinance, invest at least $2 per capita in urban forestry, and observe Arbor Day.
The additional Growth Award recognizes communities that go above and beyond the core standards to expand and strengthen their urban forestry programs.
The Tree City USA program is operated by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
