KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A mound in Kalamazoo’s Bronson Park believed used by Native Americans for ceremonial purposes over 1,000 years ago is receiving an update.
The city is teaming with the Gun Lake Tribe of the Band of Pottawatomi to add native, low-growth plants will be added to the mound to prevent pedestrians from walking over the mound. Stones will also be installed around the base of the mound, with signage also added.
In 2021 is was determined a structure or a series of large posts in a circle were in place before the mound was built, but there was no evidence the mound was used for burials.
The mound is located in the park near the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre.
The landscaping work began this week and is expected to be complete by early fall.
